The inaugural “Building a Free-Play-Friendly City:
An Interdisciplinary Collaboration in Place-making” conference will bring together global experts to explore how place-making can transform urban environments into vibrant,
free-play-friendly communities.
Hosted by Hong Kong Shue Yan University and The School of Professional Education and Executive Development (SPEED) of The Hong Kong Polytechnic University, and co-organized with Playright Children’s Play Association, the event will feature exchanges among scholars, urban planners, architects, educators, social welfare practitioners, play advocates, and policymakers.
The conference aims to raise awareness and inspire strategic actions to support free play in Hong Kong. By fostering interdisciplinary collaboration, it seeks to embed free play as a cornerstone of urban life, cultivating communities where imagination, inclusion, and joy are guaranteed.
Mark your calendars and get the tickets for the conference dates, 23–24 October 2025, for the main conference at Hong Kong Shue Yan University and pre-conference workshops on 22 October 2025.

“How Do Children Experience Streets?”
The Reverse Periscope
In urban planning and design, adults often overlook an important
user group—children. The Global Designing Cities Initiative (GDCI) has developed an innovative sensory tool called the "Reverse Periscope” based on the “Streets for Kids" program. This tool allows adults to experience the urban environment from a height of 95 centimeters, which is the perspective of young children. The reverse periscope is a do-it-yourself tool developed as part of the GDCI’s Streets for Kids program, that encourages planners, city officials, and others to experience the obstacles and attractions of city streets from a child’s perspective.
Ms Christine Lee from Beyond Playmaking, Taiwan and Mr. Potato Yu from Playright Children’s Play Association, Hong Kong will facilitate the participants to experience the urban environment from a child's height of 95 centimeters and gain valuable insights into designing more inclusive spaces. Users are invited to experiment with the periscope to promote engagement around child-focused street design and mobility.

Through different user personas and real scenarios, we will use the design thinking toolkit to explore how practitioners across different sectors can ideate on new solutions for inclusive play. The workshop is open to practitioners from different sectors including NGO, design, academia, and government agencies.
